A police sergeant from Mthatha’s VIP Unit has been arrested for being in possession of 551kg worth of copper, worth R30,000, in Wilsonia, East London this morning.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku, said the man was apparently in East London trying to sell the copper in the area, when a member of the public tipped off the Cambridge Police.
The copper has since been positively identified by Eskom, Telkom and the Buffalo City municipality.
The Eastern Cape’s Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zamuthonga Mki, said police management condemned this kind of conduct within the organisation and promised to have punitive measures taken against the member concerned.
The police officer will appear in East London Magistrate court on charges of Possession of Possible Stolen Goods soon.
