House burns down in Westering

A house burnt down in Woolhope Street, just opposite the Westering High School, in Port Elizabeth this afternoon.

Police spokesman, Warrant Officer  Alwin Lebans, said the owner of the house, 50-year-old Wayne de Wit, had been at home alone watching TV when he noticed the house was filling up with smoke.

Lebans said De Wit had managed to get out of the house and call the fire brigade but the fire had spread rapidly and had caused significant damage to the property.

Lebans said the cause of the fire was unknown at this stage.
