Police condemn revenge attack

Police have condemned the recent savage revenge attack by community members that left a 21-year-old man dead.

Police spokesman, Captain Andre Beetge said the man was accused of being part of a group of three men who raped and murdered a 24-year-old woman in the bushes between Wells Estate and Bluewater Bay in Port Elizabeth on the 2nd of October at around 4pm.

Beetge said community members from Wells Estate had caught the 21-year-old last week Tuesday and had beaten him to death for his alleged involvement in the crime.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Celiwe Binta said, “Communities must respect the law and give alleged offenders the opportunity to face their trials. The SAPS will not tolerate this behavior, because avenge seekers become criminals themselves, and SAPS will have no option, but to arrest them for their unlawful actions. It is very critical that the community members work with the SAPS and report criminals and criminal activities”.

Beetge said police were following up very good leads and arrests into the revenge attack is expected soon.
