Kouga declared a disaster area

The Kouga region has been declared a Local Disaster Area.

The declaration was made at a Special Mayoral Committee meeting at Jeffreys Bay yesterday afternoon.

Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said heavy torrential rains over the past week had severely damaged the region’s infrastructure.

“Our initial estimate of the flood damage to the area is R97,87 million,” he said. “This includes damage to our road, water, sewerage and stormwater infrastructure.”

He said official verification of the damage would commence tomorrow. This will be handled by consultants appointed by the Cacadu District Municipality.

The Mayor said the resolution that Kouga be declared a Local Disaster Area, as well as the draft business plan outlining the damage, would be submitted to the district municipality in order for them to follow all due processes for Kouga to be declared a National Disaster Area.

“This process is necessary if Kouga is to obtain disaster relief funding from national government for the rehabilitation of the affected areas,” he explained.
