Tanzanian stowaway arrested, facing deportation

Police have arrested a Tanzanian national in Port Elizabeth harbourĀ  yesterday after he snuck aboard a container ship heading to Panama.

Police spokesman, Captain Stanley Jarvis, said the 25-year-old man from Dar es Salaam had been apprehended by members of the Department of Home Affairs and was currently being detained in the holding cells at the Humewood police station.

He said investigations had revealed that the man had been illegally living in South Africa for the past four years and had hopped on board the cargo vessel in Durban, not realising the next port of call was Port Elizabeth.

He said the man was most likely going to be sent back to Tanzania.
