Police and community members are searching for a man who was swept away by the Wit river yesterday evening following heavy rains.
Police spokesman, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, said police were searching for a 32-year-old man who was swept away shortly after 5pm yesterday.
Swart said the man and to co-workers had been on their way home and he and his one friend had tried to cross the river but were immediately swept away.
Another man who had been nearby, known only as Pita, jumped into the river and was able to pull the mans 37-year-old friend to shore, but had been unable to find the other man and had then gone looking for help.
Swart said police had been notified and the Search and Rescue team, along with their dogs, were dispatched from Uitenhage.
Swart said the search had been temporarily suspended, due to bad light and continuous rain, and would resume today.
