Contractor damages pipe, leaves S.strand residents without water

The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has warned residents of Summerstrand and Humewood that they may be without water following damage to a pipeline near the Port Elizabeth Airport.

Municipal spokesman, Kupido Baron, said water supply to Summerstrand, Walmer, Humewood and Humerail and surrounds would be affected this afternoon due to a 525 mm diameter steel water pipe that was damaged by a contractor at the Port Elizabeth International Airport.

“Work is under way and four water tankers will be deployed in the area,” he said.

Baron said while the municipality would fix the pipe, they would also begin with the necessary procedures to recoup damages from the relevant contractor.

No time frame for the restoration of supply is available at this stage

Baron said residents could contact the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s 24 hour service delivery centre at 0800 20 50 50 if they would like to find out where the tankers are.
