The police have captured the last two awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Barkley East Correctional Centre last month.
Police spokesman Major Ernest Sigobe confirmed that the two men were arrested yesterday afternoon, shortly before 4pm within Barkley East, where they had apparently been hiding out since escaping custody on the 25th of August.
A 55-year-old correctional services officer, Mzolisi Dusubana, was killed and three of his colleagues injured during the escape.
Sigobe said the escapees were facing a range of charges from house breaking and theft, assault with aggravating circumstances and murder.
“They are appearing in Barkley East Magistrate’s Court today facing their original charges as well as escaping from lawful custody, murder and unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition,” he said.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Celiwe Binta welcomed the re-arrest of these criminals and thanked the members of the community for the role they played in fighting crime in the province.
