Breaking News: ANC factions clash at Standard House

A group of around 100 protesters, believed to be supporters of the Nceba Faku faction of the ANC, have gathered at Standard House in Govan Mbeki Avenue in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Unconfirmed reports say that the Nelson Mandela Bay’s mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, was briefly held hostage by the group following a meeting at the ANC Regional Offices.

A source close to the scene said the Mayor’s supporters had to be called in to get the Mayor out the building as tensions ran high between the two factions.

Police spokesman, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said she could not confirm that the Mayor had been held hostage.

“We are aware of a public disturbance outside Standard House and are on route to the scene,” she said.

Janse van Rensburg said more information would be released once it became available.
