Police on manhunt for four escaped awaiting trial prisoners

Two prisoners who escaped from police custody in May were rearrested early  yesterday morning.

Menzi Zekani, 23, and Sonwabile Makhonco, 29, were cornered in Mdantsane after being on the run for two months, Brigadier Marinda Mills said.

They were part of a gang of four prisoners who escaped while being transported from Ngqamakhwe SAPS to Wellington Correctional Facility in Mthatha on May 23.

Two R5 rifles and a 9mm pistol were recovered.

While the men were on the run they allegedly committed hijackings and business robberies.

The gang were also believed to be involved in a shootout in which Waarant Officer Mawethu Siganga was killed on July 4. Zwelithini Gibeni was injured in the shooting and arrested.

On July 11, police received a tip off that 24-year-old gang leader Ntlantla “Shoes” Mvoko was in Zimbane Valley in Mthatha.

Members of the National Intervention Unit arrested him later in the day.

Eastern Cape commissioner Lt-Gen Celiwe Binta commended the officers who worked with “dedication and determination” to detain the escaped men.
