A fire broke out at the Checkers at Greenacres in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth shortly after 3am this morning, causing widespread damage to the store.
Speaking from the scene Fire Brigade spokesman, Ben Coetzee, said the fire appears to have started in Checkers and spread to the House and Home, causing widespread damage.
“There has been a lot of fire and water damage to the area, as well as a lot of secondary smoke damage to the surrounding shops,” he said.
At least five fire brigade trucks and additional supporting personnel decended on the shopping centre in the early hours of the morning to bring the fire under control, with additional team members coming on site at 8am to assist and relieve the fire fighters who worked tirelessly to battle the fire.
“At this point in time we have not determined the cause of the fire,” said Coetzee.
Coetzee said the fire had been brought under control, and the focus was now on preventing further water damage and preventing any further spread of the fire.
Coetzee said the eastern section of Greenacres mall, where the fire originated, will be closed for the rest of the day while damage assessments and structural integrity surveys were conducted.
The parking lots surrounding the stores affected had also been cordoned off to the public.
