A light aircraft has apparently crashed in the Elands River area on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth near Rocklands after colliding with power cables.
Police spokesperson, warrant officer Gerda Swart, said the 55-year-old pilot had been rushed to St Georges hospital, where he was said to be in a critical condition.
Swart said police had been notified of the crash after a farmer saw the plane go down on a farm at Elands River near Rocklands at around 7.30pm.
The man, whose name the police did not give last night, had taken off from the Uitenhage airport earlier in the evening.
By 11pm, the police were still gathering details about the crash.
“We have cordoned off the scene and have alerted the Civil Aviation Authority but will be waiting for for first light and then launch an investigation,” Swart said.
“Investigators from the aviation authority in Pretoria are scheduled to arrive in the morning.”
She said police officers would be posted at the scene throughout the night to ensure that evidence was not tampered with.
